Caring for Your Monstera

Water

Monsteras are resilient plants that tend to be quite forgiving. They are somewhat drought-tolerant and prefer soil that is kept moist but never wet. To check if your plant needs water, insert your finger about one inch into the soil — if it feels nearly dry, it’s time to water.

One of the most important factors in encouraging leaf fenestration is consistent, thorough watering. When you water, be sure to fully saturate the soil until water drains from the bottom of the pot. Avoid letting your Monstera sit in soggy soil, and allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Plants placed in brighter light will use more water and generally need watering every one to two weeks. Yellowing leaves are often a sign of overwatering.

Soil + Fertilization

Monsteras prefer a light, fluffy soil mix with excellent drainage and aeration, allowing roots to dry out between waterings.

When you first bring your plant home, it will likely already contain a slow-release fertilizer, so it’s best to wait four to six months before adding more. Over-fertilizing can cause more harm than good. Once established, fertilize monthly during the active growing season in spring and summer using a houseplant fertilizer.

Providing your Monstera with a stake or moss pole while it’s young helps support healthy growth. If leaves begin to look pale or light green around the veins, the plant may benefit from more frequent feeding — just be sure to follow product instructions carefully. If aerial roots grow long and extend outside the pot, they can be gently tucked back into the soil without harming the plant.

Light

In lower light, Monstera leaves will remain mostly whole or develop only a few splits. To encourage more fenestration, place your plant in bright, indirect light, ideally near a south- or east-facing window. In these conditions, Monsteras tend to grow faster, larger, and more dramatically.

As jungle plants, Monsteras naturally grow beneath the canopy of taller trees, so their leaves can burn if exposed to too much direct sun. A west-facing window can work, but protection from strong afternoon sun is important. If direct light is unavoidable, limit exposure to two or three hours of gentle morning sun.

Unsure about the light levels in your space?

Low light provides enough brightness to comfortably read without additional lighting.
Medium light casts a soft or faint shadow.
Bright light casts a strong, defined shadow.

Temperature + Humidity

Monsteras are adaptable and do well in typical home temperatures. They thrive between 18–29°C and prefer humidity levels above 30%, with 50% being ideal. Canadian homes can be quite dry in winter, so a warm, well-lit bathroom is often a favourite spot. Light misting can also help boost humidity. Keep plants away from drafts, heating vents, and cold air.

Characteristics

These tropical houseplants add instant greenery and visual impact while also helping to purify the air. Monsteras are easy and forgiving to grow, making them a great choice for many homes. However, it’s important to note that they are toxic to pets and should be kept out of reach of animals and young children.
