Leaf Fenestration by Ottawa's Garden Centre

Let’s Talk Leaf Fenestration by Gemmell's Garden Center

There are many plant features and growth habits that amaze and impress, and in this post we’re taking a closer look at leaf fenestration.

Leaf fenestration occurs when plants naturally produce holes or “windows” in their leaves. While this feature is visually striking, it also serves an important purpose. For example, birds of paradise develop splits along the edges of their leaves to allow wind to pass through, reducing damage. It’s believed that Monstera deliciosa produces its iconic holes to allow more sunlight to reach the lower leaves as the plant grows in dense jungle environments.

While many plants display fenestrated leaves, Monstera deliciosa, famously known as the Swiss cheese plant and sometimes called split-leaf philodendron is one of the most recognizable. Typically, a Monstera will grow to at least three feet wide before it begins producing leaves with holes, which is why younger plants often have solid, heart-shaped leaves.

Looking for something smaller? Little Swiss Monstera, also known as Monstera adansonii, offers smaller leaves that are still big on texture. As the plant matures and conditions improve, its leaves grow larger and develop more pronounced fenestration.

If you’re looking for something even more compact, Gemmell’s Garden Centre also carries Monstera adansonii and Rhaphidophora tetrasperma — often referred to as the mini Monstera, despite belonging to a different plant family. With smaller fenestrated leaves and a natural climbing habit, these plants are favourites for shelves, trellises, and plant stands.

Have one of these beauties in your home? Understanding leaf fenestration helps explain how these plants grow and what they need to thrive. With the right care and patience, fenestration becomes a sign of a healthy, happy plant — and one that only becomes more interesting over time.
