Why You Should Plant Another Shrub This Season

Shrubs are the bones of every garden. They provide structure, fill space, and create a sense of permanence, which is why many gardeners are leaning more heavily into shrub-based plantings. Shrubs offer long-term beauty with relatively easy care, making them a smart investment in any landscape.

The art of landscaping with shrubs lies in understanding the light conditions in your garden and respecting the mature size of the plants you choose. Full-sun shrubs will not thrive in shade, and a shrub that naturally grows five to six feet tall cannot be kept at three feet long-term. Choosing the right plant for the right place is key to success.

Which Shrubs Flower All Summer?

This is the number one question we’re asked at the garden centre, and the honest answer is: none. Some shrubs, such as potentilla and spirea, bloom for long periods, while others like dwarf lilacs and weigela will rebloom. However, nothing flowers continuously all summer except annuals.

Instead, aim to select shrubs that bloom at different times throughout the season. With the wide variety available, you can enjoy waves of colour from spring through fall. Below are a few of my favourite flowering shrubs for this gardening season — listed in no particular order, because I love them all.

The Best Flowering Shrubs for Your Garden

Hydrangea ‘Bobo’ Hydrangea paniculata
This sweet, compact hydrangea is covered in large white blooms in mid to late summer, which gradually turn pink as cooler fall nights arrive. It’s perfect for front borders and small gardens, and it’s both tough and reliable. Named by one of our own staff! Grows approximately 1 m x 1 m in full sun or part shade.

Serviceberry Amelanchier canadensis
A must-have native shrub that deserves more attention in landscape design. It’s covered in white flowers in spring, followed by purple berries that birds love, and finishes the season with brilliant red, orange, and yellow fall colour. Grows approximately 6 m x 3 m in sun or part shade.

Barberry ‘Concord’ Berberis thunbergii
While we love many barberries, this dwarf variety is a favourite. It forms a tidy, rounded shape with velvety deep purple foliage. Tough, drought-tolerant, and low maintenance, it adds excellent colour contrast to the garden. Grows approximately 40 cm x 50 cm in full sun.

Summer Sweet ‘Hummingbird’ Clethra alnifolia
This unique shrub produces long, white, candle-like flowers in mid-summer with a beautiful fragrance. It’s an excellent choice for shadier gardens and a must-have for plant collectors. Grows approximately 70 cm x 70 cm in part shade and is hardy to Zone 3.

Abelia mosanensis
An old-fashioned shrub that’s not as well known as it should be. This true garden princess produces white and pink blooms in late May or early June that perfume the air with a jasmine-like scent. Elegant growth habit, attractive seed heads, and orange fall foliage make this a standout. Grows approximately 1.5 m x 1.5 m in full sun.

Elderberry Sambucus canadensis
Traditionally believed to ward off evil spirits when planted near the home, elderberry is a large shrub worth planting if you have the space. Its cut-leaf green foliage is topped with flat clusters of white flowers, followed by edible berries that can be used for jelly or wine if the birds don’t get them first. Grows approximately 4 m x 4 m and works well as a privacy planting, even in partial shade.
