You may have noticed that fertilizer ratios have been changing in recent years. This shift is intentional, research driven, and better for both your plants and the environment. We wanted to take a moment to explain why we have embraced this new way of thinking in horticulture and why we are excited to offer a high micronutrient, water soluble fertilizer to our customers.

Understanding N P K

For many years, the standard fertilizer ratios were twenty twenty twenty or fifteen thirty fifteen. These formulas were widely used and heavily marketed, but research has shown that they contain far more phosphorous than our gardens actually need and not nearly enough micronutrients.

High levels of phosphorous can interfere with a plant’s ability to absorb essential micronutrients such as iron, manganese, and copper. Over time, this imbalance can weaken plants and reduce overall soil health by harming beneficial microorganisms. Excess phosphorous also contributes to algae blooms in our lakes and rivers, which has become an increasing environmental concern.

Why We Use 17 5 17

At Gemmell’s, we have been using a seventeen five seventeen water soluble fertilizer with added micronutrients on all of our plants for several years. This balanced ratio provides plants with what they need for healthy growth without overloading the soil with unnecessary phosphorous. The added micronutrients support stronger roots, better flowering, and more resilient plants overall.

Until recently, this fertilizer was only available for use in our own growing operations. We are happy to say that it is now available for our customers as well, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
