Hooray for Hostas | Drought Tolerant, Shade Loving & Gorgeous All Summer Long

Hostas the Drought Tolerant, Shade Loving Ottawa Staple

Hostas are one of our favourite perennials at Gemmell’s. They play an important role in garden design and are a perfect choice for edging along walkways, planting beneath tree canopies, and adding rich foliage contrast alongside brighter flowering plants.

Looking for a plant that thrives in full or part shade, is drought tolerant once established, and stays tidy and beautiful all summer long? Then a hosta is exactly what you need.

Hostas are a great for Ottawa gardens

Unparalleled for their stunning foliage, hostas range in colour from blue grey to deep green to bright chartreuse. They are true showpieces in the garden from early spring through late fall, when many varieties turn a beautiful shade of yellow. With over forty five varieties available here at Gemmell’s, choosing just one can be a challenge. Here are a few of our favourites.

Hosta of the Year Earth Angel

A large, elegant hosta with heart shaped blue green leaves edged in creamy white. Pale lavender flowers appear in summer. A stunning statement plant for the shade garden. Grows approximately thirty to thirty five inches tall.

Hosta Striptease

This eye catching variety features a light yellow centre, wide green margins, and a thin white stripe separating the two. Performs well in both sun and shade and adds interest wherever it is planted. Grows approximately twenty four inches tall.

Hosta Fire and Ice

A crisp, high contrast hosta with bright white centres and deep green edges. Beautiful planted between rocks, along garden borders, or paired with white flowering plants and ferns. Grows approximately twenty inches tall.

Slugs Love Hostas

Slugs are drawn to the cool, shady areas where hostas thrive, but there are effective and eco friendly ways to manage them. One of the best options is Diatomaceous Earth, which contains microscopic mineral particles that deter slugs when they crawl across it. Another tried and true method is placing a shallow dish of beer beneath your hostas. Slugs are attracted to it and do not crawl back out. Call it a slug bar if you wish.
