Fertilizer Has Changed. Why It Matters & What You Need to Know

New 17-5-17 Ratio

You may have noticed that fertilizer ratios have changed in recent years. The familiar N-P-K numbers many of us grew up with are being rethought, and for good reason. Read on to discover why we’ve embraced this new approach to fertilizing and how it supports healthier plants, stronger soil, and a better environment.

For years, fertilizers were commonly sold in ratios like 20-20-20 or 15-30-15. Research has since shown that these formulas often contain far more phosphorous than plants actually need, while lacking important micronutrients.

Excess phosphorous can inhibit a plant’s ability to absorb key micronutrients such as iron, manganese, and copper. Over time, this imbalance also harms beneficial microorganisms living in the soil. Beyond the garden, excess phosphorous contributes to algae blooms in lakes and rivers, negatively affecting our waterways.

Fertilizer sold at Gemmell's garden center in Smiths Falls

At Gemmell’s, we’ve been using a 17-5-17 water-soluble fertilizer with high micronutrient content on our own plants for several years. We’ve seen first-hand the difference it makes in plant health, performance, and long-term vitality. Until recently, however, it wasn’t available for our retail customers.

We’re pleased to say that this fertilizer is now available, and our customers are already seeing the results.

By choosing a balanced fertilizer with fewer excess nutrients and more essential micronutrients, we’re doing our part to support healthy plants, protect our waterways, and care for the environment here in Ottawa and beyond.

Here’s what one customer had to say:

“Thank you for creating a plant food that helps me and my friends keep the beauty of our baskets throughout the season. I started using your magical potion after purchasing my baskets at Gemmell’s this year. My girlfriends were so impressed with my hanging baskets they all wanted to know the secret. I said, ‘It’s a Gemmell’s recipe!’ Now I show up to girls’ nights with your plant food and a bottle of wine as a hostess gift — it’s very well received. We’re excited for next year’s larger tub size!”
